Welcome to the Studying Processes in Everyday Life Lab!

The Studying Processes in Everyday Life (SPIEL) Lab is part of the Department of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame.
Our lab typically uses ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to collect data using mobile devices, like smartphones and mobile breathalyzers, to collect information from research participants in their daily lives. This allows us to understand behaviors as they unfold in real-time and in the real-word. We use EMA, an intensive longitudinal method, to gather information multiple times per day for several days/weeks which allows us to understand processes of change over time. Our goal is to obtain more accurate information about when and how behaviors occur and contextual factors associated with them. Our lab also has an interest in developing mobile health (mHealth) interventions to address and prevent substance use in daily life. As a lab, we mostly focus on alcohol and other substance use, including opioid and cannabis use. In addition to this, we conduct research on the experience of physical pain, impulsivity, and non-suicidal self-injury.
